DIY Herb Infused Facial Toner- w/ Rosemary

Natural chemical free facial toners  are lovely refreshing elixirs which can be applied to your skin after cleansing or facial masks to remove or dissolve any remaining residue. They are also used to help stimulate circulation, restore your skins acid mantle, hydrate and refine your skin and temporarily reduce your pore size. A homemade facial toner is lovely not only because it gently nourishes your skin, but you know it is organic, natural and chemical free for which your skin will bless you!
Avoid alcohol-based toners, which strip your skin of its natural oils, overstimulating the sebaceous glands and making your skin far greasier than before. The ideal chemical free facial toner should heal while gently and naturally correcting the skins balance.

Here are a few ideas of skin healing herbs and essential oils to customize your own toner.
Calendula andcomfrey are both great for any skin type.  Comfrey heals damaged tissue, is soothing, emollient and astringent.  Anything anti-inflammatory will help with acne and skin eruptions.
Dry to Normal Skin:
  • Chamomile - anti-inflammatory, healing, fragrant.
  • Roses - Help restore pH, mild astringent and anti-inflammatory, helps with any skin problems such as acne, varicose veins, scars, wrinkles, etc.
  • Lavender - antiseptic, soothing, healing, fragrant.
  • Marshmallow root - emollient, anti-inflammatory, softens skin.
Normal to Oily Skin:
  • Raspberry leaf - strengthens and tones skin, astringent.
  • Sage- antiseptic, astringent, anti-inflammatory, cell strengthening, helps with skin conditions.
  • Rosemary - astringent, antibacterial, anti-fungal, circulatory stimulant.
  • Yarrow - cleansing, astringent, healing.
The best essential oils for skin are the ones that are best for your skin.
That’s right–I think listening to your body includes listening to your skin. And when it comes to essential oils, different oils cater to different skin issues.
Whether you’re dealing with oily skin, wrinkles, or dry patches (or all of the above!

How to make a Herbal Infusion & Floral Water
Herbal infusions make wonderful face washes and toners and can be incorporated into almost any DIY beauty preparation. The softer more delicate parts of the plant, the flowers and leaves are used.
  • 2 teaspoons of dried flowers/leaves  or 4 teaspoons of fresh flowers / leaves
  • 1 cup of boiling water
You can crush your flowers and leaves a little to soften them with a mortar and pestle. Put your flowers and leaves in a heat resistant bowl, preferably glass, enamel or china and cover with the boiling water. Allow to steep for  at least 15 mins and make sure you cover the bowl to prevent the loss of essential volatile oils through evaporation. The longer the herbs sit in the water the better. Overnight is best.
To make floral water follow all the above steps and use only flowers in your infusion.
Strain the infusion, store in  a glass jar in the refrigerator. The infusion will last 4-6 days

Natural Facial  Toner Recipes the Chemical Free Way!
Recipe-Mix 3 parts of herb or flower infused water with 2 parts of witch hazel and one part of apple cider vinegar. Add 10 drops of your essential oil of choice. Mix it well and then store it in a spray bottle. Using a cotton pad, use this toner 2 times a day. This toner will minimize the pore size and will also absorb excess oil as it has anti- inflammatory benefits. Not only this, you will also notice tightening of your skin with regular usage.
Once you begin experimenting with facial toners and finding which ingredients most suit your skin , you will be able to nourish your skin and reap the benefits of beautiful glowing, healthy, clear skin! By rotating which toners you use on a regular basis as well as your moisturizer, you will soon see the benefits and have people commenting on how fresh your skin looks. By combining with regular use of lovely homemade facial scrubs and masks as well, you do not need to spend a fortune on expensive shop bought skincare.

  • Apple Cider Vinegar - Though this makes a great toner for some, others  have issues with ACV being just a little bit too acidic and causes skin to break out.The great thing about apple cider vinegar is that you can infuse skin nourishing herbs into the vinegar before using it as a toner! Just like alcohol, vinegar extracts many of the healing properties from herbs, very easily.
  • Witch Hazel - A fabulous astringent and naturally anti-inflammatory, witch hazel has been used for just about forever, for skin healing and facial care. Witch hazel helps to shrink the pores, banish blackheads, kill acne.
